Aberdeen is located on the east coast of Scotland and is the countrys third largest city. It is sometimes referred to as the Granite City due to its buildings sparkling with grey granite, a locally quarried stone, which was used in the building process until the mid 20th century.
The city has an interesting and sometimes troubled history. Under English control throughout the Wars of Scottish Independence, Robert the Bruce destroyed Aberdeen Castle, forced out the English and restored the city to its Scottish inhabitants. Aberdeen continued to be fought over throughout the 17th century until the bubonic plague wiped out 25% of the city’s population.
Today, Aberdeen is often known as the oil capital of Europe with large North Sea oil deposits being located off-shore and the world’s second largest heliport servicing the nearby oil rigs.
